Re: WD External Hard drive not recognized in my computer but detected in device manager

Hi guys!!!

This is a bit random wasn’t too sure how to post help properly,

I just bought a WD external 500gb its been working like a beauty on my mac but i need it work with a PC as well and its not recognising it at all, and i desperately need to be using it on the computers at my uni!!! does anyone know why it wouldn’t be working?!

It’s recognizing it on the pc and promps me to download the software which I have done but its not working at all!!!

HEY 

first check out … pc USB is Enabled OR disabled

or else

check is it appearing in the device manager …

You can use an external drive on both a Mac and Pc only if it’s formatted in FAT 32 file format.  This can be done on your Mac if you format using MS-Dos. However, keep in mind that you will have a 4 GB file size limitation, and there will be a tendency for the data to get corrupted as it’s being passed back and forth between the Mac and PC. 

Finally, if you reformat the drive you will destroy all data on it.  So, you will need to make sure that you have that data backed up before starting the process.
