Raw file

i just brough this product for the streaming capability and for the sd card reader both work realy well , but to read my picture(raw format) i had to install a 3d party application on my ipad and it realy dont work too well.

i was wondering if Wd will update it so it will be able to read the raw file right from my cloud application, since alot of user will buy the drive to dump sd card into the drive in vacation , and wont have acces to a computer to view the photo , and to edit delete some if not good…

Yea, agree it would be nice if My Cloud could read RAW.

Today I use the Filterstorm Neue for RAW images, but  you have to save the RAWs to the cameraroll as well, so it’s timeconsuming and not very good solotion endeed.

I use aceplayer to get on HD Wireless to see raw file but ils realy slow to see them, so not so usefull

Hmm, never seen Aceplayer, but they have a nice 2 app bundle and the other, AirAV, looks nice if it works to stream DLNA if it works with MPW.

Well, a RAW can be big, mine are like 25 to 37 MB.

Will try out those 2 apps and see how they do later today.

How do you se/find RAW files with Aceplayer, all it finds are mediafiles as jpg etc and no RAW, also tried AirAV and same thing, no non media files to be found.

I did put RAW files everywherte on the MPW, and only the My Cloude app finds them but can’t show them :-/

i am realy sorry i made a mistake bean playing with 2 apps at the same and iv write the wrong 1… the apps is filebrowser, go in option NAS the ip 192.168.60.1 , then turn off compatibility mode and thats it

Haha, ok… thought I was stupid

I’ve been testing File Browser Lite, and while it does see the Nikon RAW (NEF) files I use, it doesn’t show or preview them. I can’t find any setting like “Compatibility Mode” either, to get it to work. Could you confirm that File Browser is able to show you the images, and not just their file name, and explain where this compatibility mode setting is?

I have also been testing PhotoRaw Lite, which is able to view and edit NEF files. But it does some editing just to open the files, which I don’t like, and I think it also temporarily copies the file to my iPad to view it, so I probably won’t buy the full version.

Note that File Browser is able to send a file to another application to open it. In my case, I select the NEF file in File Browser and it opens the image in PhotoRaw. Could that be what is happening on your device?

Most filebrowsers and image editting tools seems to just extract the embeded jpg in RAW files.

Only a few actually loads and do work with the RAW itself.

when you open the app click on the + sign then go on NAS, enter the ip, then click on advance setting , and in this drop down menu turn off compatibility,

…or just use “scan” and go from there after it found yor device(s)

I use it for importing my RAWs to my iPhone/iPad but it is slow as you said, 30s for one RAW of 24MB :-/

Okay, conneting to the MPW using a NAS selection wasn’t necessary for me. Nor was compatibility mode. I had already scanned and found the MPW, and testing a NAS connection compared to a normal connection made no difference in functionality.

I did uninstall PhotoRaw Lite though to see if I could still view the NEF files, and I could. I’m using an iPhone4 at the moment rather than the iPad which is usually used, but that shouldn’t make difference. Well, it is still iOS 7, vs iOS 8 on the iPad, but seems to work the same.

Anyway, Filebrowser does seem to allow some viewing of NEF files. whether it is the imbedded JPEG or the actual NEF is hard to say. It does take about 30 seconds to load a NEF, but I don’t need to copy it to the iPhone first, and once viewed, or scanned by the media functionality in the MPW, it seems to retain the thumbnail image in the directory view, which is nice.

I’m goig to do some more testing and research to see if I can work out if it is viewing the NEF or the imbedded JPEG.

If it took 30s then it’s probably the RAW, if you campare with a normal jpg that loads instantly.

The files I am testing with come from a Nikon D7000 which was saving both NEF and JPG for each photo, on to separate SD cards. They have the same resolution so viewing them allows the same level of zoom, and the quality on the iPhone looks about the same, which is what I would expect.

The time from tap to display of the NEF is about 20 to 30 seconds. The interesting information is that when I tap the NEF FileBrowser does a countdown of roughly 15 seconds and reports a download rate of ~1.2 MB/s, which is consistent with a 18 to 20 MB NEF file.

The time from tap to display for JPG is 5 to 10 seconds, also with ~1.2 MB/s and a countdown of about 5 seconds, which is consistent with a 5 to 7 MB JPG files.

Note that the countdown timer isn’t very accurate or consistent in when it starts, or progress, or the rate it reports. It seems to be a rough guide only. Because I’m using the Lite version of FileBrowser, it has pop-up ads and stuff which interfere with timing anything. But I think the above is a good guide.

So, based on that File Browser is definitely reading the full NEF file. Whether it is displaying the NEF, or the imbedded JPG, is yet to be determined.

I also noted that display of thumbnails for JPGs in the file list view of FileBrowser is quite quick, and all files get a thumbnail. For NEFs though, display of thumbnails is very slow, and almost seems random or ad hoc, with only a few files getting a thumbnail unless I have already viewed the image. So if nothing else, I can see that JPG and NEF files are treated differently.

Well I finally found the FileBrowser FAQ and it confirms that the App supports display of NEF and other RAW files.

See the FAQ here: http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/support/faq.php

Search the page for the question: “What image formats does FileBrowser support?”

So it looks like FileBrowser is a good solution for viewing NEF images on the MPW, without having to copy the image to your iDevice. I think I will be buying it, as the free Lite version is very annoying with its constant pop-ups.

Yes, the paid version of FileBrowser is superior to anything I have tested so far. Well invested money.

But still i dont get why it dosent work with the WD apps

2 reasons:

-1. The OS on the phone/pad don’t support RAW.

-2. WD apps don’t support RAW.
