i purchased WD My Book 3tb only couple of day ago. The instruction was clear about formatting to HFS+J for compatibility with mac. The problems is for the past 4hrs there is no sign of progress . Is there a problem or I’m I simply impatient. I have searched the internet and there is no instruction about time required to format WD My Book 3tb. Any advice? I am currently using El Capitan
ok there is a reason some questions are not answered. This is the day and age where HDD are ready to go straight from the factory and for the technical support line to be non operational , A big question mark. It is official that erasing a brand new HDD will take 10 to 12hrs even though no single file had been saved in it by the end user. Its a shame that there is no official statement fro WD regarding this for first timers.
SOLUTION
That being said I had become a tech only days after buying a brand new HDD because i had to use it on a mac. My advice,

DO IT OVERNIGHT (or simply abandon the computer to do it’s thing )
so you will not worry about how long it takes
NOTE; make sure your computer does not loose power or go to sleep
on the mac its > System Preference - Energy saver - - Computer Sleep - (move the slider to NEVER)
After this, you may use your mac disk utility again and that takes less than a minute to petition your HDD as you like.
Do Not bother to contact the technical line because you will discover it does not exist. That was my experience.
