PLEASE HELP, Transfering Files Pausing

Hello everyone,

I just did a clean install of windows 7 professional and have almost nothing on my computer to muddle things up.  I did this to see if it would fix a problem I’m having with my external WD Mybook studio II hard drive.

Basically… The external hard drive freezes during transfers when transferring large files, or multiple files that amount to a higher total.  By transfer I mean copying it from my computer to the hard drive, or visa-versa.  I can usually transfer up to 200mbs worth of information (whether it be one file, or multiple) without a problem.  I get very high transfer speeds and its  awesome.  Also, there is no problem viewing or streaming information from the drive.  I can watch video files, play music etc. without trouble.

When I select a file, or multiple files, that equal more than 200-300mbs (it varies), the copying process just stalls mid way through.  The lights on the external drive itself also stop moving up and down and just stays solid.  Everything else continues to work… in that i can still browse the drive, but the transfer never resumes.  When I view the details of the transfer in the copy window, the transfer speed refreshes and slows to a crawl… under 1mb/s… although the progress bar doesn’t seem to indicate there is any transfer happening at all.  If I try to cancel the transfer, it just shows “cancelling” indefinitely.

I am using a firewire connection and my external drive is formatted to NTFS.

I’m running windows 7 x64 professional.

Asus P5Q Deluxe MB

4gbs Ram

Nvidia GTX 275

Intel Core 2 Duo Q9400

Fresh Install… so nothing could be interfering…

I really appreciate any suggestions… I’ve been trying to fix this forever and nothings worked.

What other details are you kindly able to provide to the WD Community? The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II has four different connection interfaces (USB, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA), which one are you currently testing? Do you obtain the same results when switching to another interface?

More details will allow more Users to better help you.

Regards,

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem with my Studio II (2 tb). I’ve tried with all the ports with the same result.

I’ve read about similar problems which are solved with a shorter cable, but it’s not my case.

Right now I’m connected through USB. My external drive is NTFS formatted.

The drive is working at full capacity, in no-RAID mode.

I have a second drive which is the same model but with 4 tb, this one in RAID1 through the eSATA port, and it works perfect.

Asus P5Q3 MB - Intel Eaglelake P45

8 gb Kingston Ram 1333 DDR3 SDRAM (4 x 2 gb)

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 512 mb
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400, 2666 MHz

Thanks in advance! If you need further details, please ask.

Wow, I’ve never actually posted on a forum before, so I super appreciate actually getting a response from you guys.

I got my hands on a USB cable, and to my surprise, the transfer has not stalled when connected this way.  It is slower than my firewire connection, but it seems to be stable.

Unfortunately, I have no way of testing the firewire interface on another computer, as the only other computer we have doesn’t have a firewire interface.

If there is a fix to this problem, I would prefer to use firewire.
I think I’m using firewire 800.

Thanks again for all the help,
