PLEASE HELP......Portable Hardrive no longer showing in windows and IT specialist unable to recover

Hi,

My Passprt (2-3 yers old) suddenly stopped showing in Windows about 4 months ago and will now not show on any PC.  I have taken it to an IT specialist who has taken it apart and have advised me that they are unable to retrieve the data from it. Apparently it is a non-standard drive and cannot be connected to a device to retrieve them.  They say there must be a problem with the USB interface.  I have a lot of family photos on it that are not back-up elsewhere and I am feeling sick with the thought that they have been lost forever.  I would like to know whether there is any way that I can recover these files, my only chance is that WD have the facilities to extract the da.  Please can you advice, I know this is out of Warranty but I am desperate for a solution.

Could the IT company have missed anything?

Hi this is a link to the data recovery that WD has listed you need a company that specializes in data recovery not just a IT place.  http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?wdc_lang=en   . It is a hard lesson to learn but backing up data to one drive is not a backup it needs to be on 2 or more drives to be safe. Hope you get your data back.
