Please help: my western digital is not recognized

Hello,
My WD external hard drive quit working when it got disconnected by moving it out of the way— softly. I though it was the USB cable so I tried the new cable and still nothing but when I plug it in the light still comes on and and its running.

I unplugged and plugged back and it’s not recognized by any of the computers at home and work. It does not make the clicking sound that it’s usually associated with “dying HD”

I checked it with the “Disk Utilities” app and the drive name shows up “grayed out”, when I selected it reads as follows:

Name: 500 GB WD Passport 0704 Media
Mount point: Not mounted
Format: MS-DOS(FAT)
Number of folders: -
Capacity: 500 GB
Available: -
Used-
Number of files -

Are all the files completely lost? Any information could help, I don’t have a back up copy of these files.

Thanks you in advance,
~elena

Hi. If you were copying any data, or had just copied any data, when it came unplugged, then it’s most likely that you corrupted the partition on the drive. If so, you will need to get a partition recovery software to restore the partition. However, you won’t be able to recover any files that were corrupted.

Hello Bill and thank you for your reply. I was not copying any files, I was simply looking in the folders when it got disconnected. Should I take it to one of those recovery data shops? they usually charge a set up fee of $200 just to run a test.
Thanks in advance!

I would research online for a free or cheap data recovery software and try restoring the partition first. But that’s up to you.

Thank you!

you’re welcome.
