Please help - bizarre problem with 4TB MyBook Studio Edition II External Drive and Mac

Hi all,

I just replaced my 2TB Time Machine drive with the WD MyBook Studio 4TB External Hard drive connected to a new Mac Pro via FireWire 800.

The old Time Machine ran out of space (total backup of my computer is around 2.3 TB) and the WD with 4TB seemed better suited to the task.

Although the drive works and connects to the Mac perfectly, Time Machine fails to backup properly. It initiates the first 1.98TB backup, which takes quite a while and uses up around 50% of the drive; however, once this is done, for subsequent backups, it backs up the entire 1.98TB AGAIN and then I get a message saying the drive is out of space!

The drive is partioned as RAID 0 using the full 4TB of space via the WD config facility.

I’ve tried everything - formatting the drive, redoing Time Machine from scratch, nothing doing. It recognizes the drive, connects fine, starts the backup from the first time fine but then after completion, restarts the backup again and backs up the whole computer IN ADDITION to the first backup.

Drive seems stuck in a loop where it backs up the whole computer X2 on the first backup atttempt, runs out of space and hence can’t be used.

Total size of backup is only 1.98TB.

Any thoughts on what is going on here?

Many thanks

That does indeed sound like an odd issue. What happens when the backup is full and you try to put data on it? What did Apple say when you contacted them?
