I’m backing up several drives on my computer on my MyBook Elite 1.5Tb, and all of the drives, except for one backed up completely.
The one drive that failed to back up completely is my main system drive. All said, it’s missing just 21Mb - unfortunately, all 20 out that 21Mb are rather important word documents - 390 of them to be exact. After I got the “Partial Backup Accomplished” message in the top left, and I saw I was still missing a good deal of files, I stopped the back up and restarted it, to see if that would get the files to transfer. no such luck.
Now, I did not run out of room - so that’s not the problem. and none of the files are read/write protected, so they should copy just fine, and they are all along the lines of .doc, .docx, .pub, etc.
I’m moving a just under a week and I really need to get this back up completed as soon as possible.
Getting the same thing. SmartWare found 9 files it couldn’t copy over for whatever reason and it won’t continue. Have tried stopping the back-up, restarting the program and starting the back-up again. This is the second time this has happened. The first time I wiped the drive and started it over again. I hadn’t updated to the new firmware or SmartWare versions since backing up my business files was my first priority. I’ve updated the firmware to the latest version and updated the software to 1.3.016; I have a MyBook Studio.
On a side note, this software seems really fragile. It crashes on a pretty regular occasion. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled which have made zero improvements to the stability. It would be nice to see a WD rep respond to this thread instead of letting it sit unanswered for two weeks.
I have the exact same problem. Smartware keeps complaining that some if cannot find some files or folders, yet Windows can find, move, edit, delete, open, whatever you want. This happened after the upgrade to 1.3.0.16. Nothing seems to help and after a reboot, Smartware won’t even recognize that there are files that have not been backed-up.
I cannot deal with this crappy software any longer! I expected much better from WD.
Check the files for a quirky character in the filename. I had the same experience where there were two undeleted MSWord backup files containing a “~” character, like, MEMOA~01.doc. There were actually two instances, one …01.doc, and the second …02.doc, and Smartware wouldn’t backup either, and reported them as having the same filename. I concluded that Smartware couldn’t interpret the “~” character correctly when it interpreted the Smartware specific names recorded on the backup drive, back to the original file name. Removing the “~” from both the files, and the files flew to the backup instantly.
taskmanager, processes tab. image name (click it), scroll down and end anything with “WD” at the beginning. open control panel, administrative tools, services, scroll and find any WD services (we killed them earlier in task manager), start them. go to C drive (the one with your OS on it) pregramdata (or equilivant), western digital folder, WD smartware folder, (wd drive manager if it exists), double click WDDMStatus.exe
all this does is restarts the smartware and have it get unstuck, mne does this all the time
Draconas’ fix worked a few times until it hit a large file it was having a hard time copying and it failed on me again. I’ve tried every combination of stopping and restarting the services, restarting the backup, unplugged the drive, tried USB instead of Firewire, restarted the computer… pretty much every thing I could do and it either says “Partial Backup Accomplished” or “Ready to perform back up” and will not respond. Good times…
It’s a bit unnerving that WD has yet to respond to this post acknowledging our problem. I’ve even contacted them directly two weeks ago and have yet to receive a response. Every other computer hardware I use has active reps that monitor the forums. This is the fourth drive I received from them as an RMA and I’ve about lost all faith in the quality of WD’s hardware, software and customer service. Sure their drives are at a decent price point, but at what cost?
