Open Source Firmware

That would be something…

If it’s not realistic  please provide some API so users could write add-ins!

I see SanDisk in duty there. They got their products known BECAUSE there was rockbox available for e.g. the e200v1 series, and then they changed the hardware, without any apparent way of telling which one you got before ordering. This is a very unfair sales practice!

The Sansa series players are hardware, with an OS (firmware) to allow them to play music, why would they care if it gets “Rockboxed”?

I’m guessing Sandisk doesn’t go open source because they don’t want competitors to benefit from being able to read their source code.  Personally, I think it would be smart to release it open source and just let the open source community fix all their bugs for them.

Sandisk have certainly cared before, about just that.  The active encouragement by Sandisk of ports of the Rockbox firmware to their player helped put the Sansa brand on the map.   People like to have options, especially creative  intriguing options.  As a current Sansa View owner I wish I had such an option right now.
