Hello, my WD my passport probably dates back to 2010. Format NTFS. Usually, we use it with a PC. I now want to use it with my Macbook pro running Sierra 10.12.4. But I can only read the files, but not copy anything on it. I would like to reformat the whole WD disk to be able to use it with my Mac, as I don’t need the files on it anymore. Can I do that even though I have Sierra, and the WD is only compatible up until Snow leopard as per user manual. Thanks for your input on this issue.
Hello Christiane1,
As the drive is formatted in NTFS you can only perform read functions on the drive using it on MAC. NTFS is a windows native file system. To use the drive on MAC you need to format the drive into EXFAT file system, which is compatible to be used on both MAC and Windows. However, if you want to use Time machine on MAC to backup your computer the drive need to be formatted in HFS+(Mac OS extended journal) file system. Also, HFS+ file system is native for MAC so you will only get read operation using it on windows.
Please follow the below link to know how can you format the drive into EXFAT file system:

Thank you for your input. Very helpful. As I will exclusively use it with a MAC, I will format it to HFS+. Thanks
