Just got my MyPassport Slim 2TB today. Of course, it demanded the SES driver butI read that it should also be nagging that it wants to mount a virtual CD (VCD) drive. I’m glad it’s not nagging and that I don’t have to run a utility to turn that off. But, I have to wonder, should it be nagging? Is something missing or wrong? Or is this just a welcome change in production standards where the VCD “feature” is removed?
Thank you to everyone for your kind attention and any responses you might offer.
The newer drives come with a version of the VCD that does not mount unless security is installed.
The VCD allows you to unlock the drive from the computer and run the software.

Hmm. Okay. I think I see. Thank you. So, then, the software will run as portable binaries without requiring installation, I guess? And it will run from a virtual drive mounted from the My Passport drive? Good to know. I don’t plan to use the hardware encryption because I will be writing encrypteddata to the drive where those data have been encoded with other software. Im going to format the drive and delete all of that software. I’ve archived it to an optical disc and I’ve installed only the WD progams I need. I won’t be using SmartWare.
I’ve got to say, there are layers of complications (hardware encryption modules, SES, VCD.) involved with these 3 year warrantied My Passport drives that I would rather not have to actively eradicate and avoid. I didn’t expect these problems. I wish that the Elements line of WD portables had a 3 year warranty instead of a 1 year warranty. I only chose the 3 year warranty drives because I felt that they had a more reliable hard drive in them and, of course, because the drives with a 3 year warranty cost the same as the drives with a 1 year warranty.
