No permission to access my retrieved files

Hi, can somebody help me with a pretty basic question? I believe I’m missing a very simple step.

I backup my files for My Passpory so I could format my PC. I re-started it with factory settings.

Now I pluged in My Passport, retrieved my files, and with that done, I tried to open them, but the PC says I “do not have permission to access the file location”.

What is happening? It’s happening with no matter what type of file.

I’ve tried changing the ownership of the folders.

Properties>Security>Advanced>Owner>Edit as an Admin. And than changing the owner to me (Admin) and checking the box " Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Then Apply.

Not working.

And it seems that I have access to the first 3 subfolders, but than starting from the 4th, nothing.

But the pictures, I can’t see any of them, no matter what folder they are.

Hi, sorry to read that you are unable to access the information on your drive.

I had this problem before and I was able to fix it by changing the owner to “Everyone” (without the quotes) and changing the permissions to “Everyone” to have full control.

I see no way to use “Everyone” anywhere in Security settings.   Under “Group  or User Names” I selected “Users” as the least restricted group.  Under “Permissions for Users” all options are checked as allowed.  An error window pops up saying, “An error occurred while applying security information to G:\WD_SmartWare.  Failed to enumerate objects in the container.  Access denied.”  Then a Windows Security window pops up to say, “Unable to save permission changes on WD_SmartWare.  Access denied.”

Now, I just dowloaded an update to WD Smart Ware.  I have had full access before that download.  Can you help?

Hello there, welcome to the community.

You can try  this, but instead of click on you user, you click on “Other Users & Groups” and do a search for “everyone” and change the owner to this user.

all of the advice given above is good, useful–however i feel i should mention something that i didn’t think was intuitive which is…when you are changing the ownership/user permissions do not click “apply” first, you need to click “OK” then it will give you access. if you click “apply” first which yeah, is probably more logical, you’re denied access (if they were restricted as you mention).
