New WD My Passport External Drive for Mac

The Drive is installed, and I can click Back Up Now from Time Machine, but it does not change to stop backing up. Yet it appears the backups are happening after entering Time Machine.
However, the backed up files do not appear in Finder when selecting the external drive.

The Drive is installed, and I can click Back Up Now from Time Machine, but it does not change to “stop backing up”. Yet it appears the backups are happening after entering Time Machine. However, the backed up files do not appear in Finder when selecting the external drive.

Nor can I delete individual backed up files. I cleaned the Mac hard drive, exported many files and did a fresh hard drive backup to My Passport. Want to delete the old backups.

Additional question: A full back up was done 09/11/24 at 11:29 a.m. That backup is still there. Today is 09/17/24: Today and yesterday all previous days’ backups are gone. Only the 09/11/24 back up is there along with backups from the current day. What is happening to the backups for the intervening days?
