New Hard Drive, WD Backup duplicating to another volume folder

I have a My Passport 1TB external drive for backups. My internal hard drive died so I bought and installed a new one; initialized and formatted; gave it the same drive letter as the original, D. I tried to restore my backup to the original location but it wouldn’t let me (Unable to restore files from My Passport. Please make sure your drive is connected and accessible.), presumably because the new hard drive is not the original device. So I restored to a new location, my new D drive. All good, my files are where they need to be.

I added the D: drive back to my backup plan and now WD Backup wants to re-copy everything that it already has from the D: drive back to a new volume folder on My Passport, effectively giving me two full copies of my D drive on My Passport. What should I do? I’ve paused backups for now before it can copy 300gb+
