I have now had these two drives for a couple of months an basically they work fine. However, every few days when I go to my computer to access one or the other of the two drives, it has dropped off line. Now all I have to do is pull the power cord and after a few seconds plug it back into the drive. The computer will recognize the new drive and I am back in business. Is there anything that can be done to correct this problem. Saw someone else with the same complaint but now cannot find his post to the Community.
Sorry, the drives are terabyte capacity not Gig as stated.
Hi there,
Have you tried to see if connecting the drive’s power adapter directly to the wall outlet to see if this helps, I would also like to know if the drive gets offline while it is in use or while it is visible on the computer.
Sorry, I had other problems and put this minor problem off for the time being. I own two of the 12 Terabyte My Book Duo drives. I purchased them maybe 4 weeks apart. They both have the identical problem that about every 48 Hrs they are not accessible to the computer. I do see them in the Directory but when I drill down to a specific folder or file I get an error message to the effect that there is a hardware failure. Now I just pull the power plug on the defective drive and plug it right back in and all is well for maybe the next 48 hrs or so. Not a big problem here but would be for someone that is using his computer frequently from a remote location.
Now I have never noticed a problem while the drive is actually in use and have lost no data nor have I had to rewrite files. The problem seems to occur when the computer is not in use. I have not tried the direct plug in of the drives as there is not another outlet nearby and an extension cord would bring the wrath of my wife and daughter. I do have many WD drives smaller in nature and lots of cords. May try to put that data on the Duo drives but somewhat fear such a great loss of data should a drive fail. I really do not think the power source is the problem as nothing else in the house seems sensitive and other WD drives are plugged in the same source. Both Duo drives habitually need a power interruption reset.
Hope you find my 2nd message. I do see something quite unique in the way I happened to power the two WD Duo drives. I have a large power hub labelled ACCELL that I must have purchased from Amazon. It looks like it can handle lots of power, has its own switch, and a large hub with six lines with individual plugs. I accidentally turned the power off examining this thing. When I returned power the two DUO drives did not go back online as far as the computer was concerned. I did got get an extension cord and now one of the drives is powered directly from a fresh outlet in the wall. Covered the cord with a rug as it is in front of a doorway. Will let this set awhile. I may later give your two units their own power source in a power strip and eliminate this strange gadget. I am now on your side and think this may contain some regulation or oversurge circuitry and may be doing something. Will let you know what I find. In the future I will use a more conventional power source for your two drives and hope that will make a difference.
