MyBook crashes then shows no more data! Help!

Hi! Would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

The other day, I was using my MyBook Elite and tried to extract a zip file on it. It didn’t work, stating some error which I can not remember. Then it crashed and I reconnected. This time,  the external display on the Elite, did not show the HDD usage (which previously it did!). It just showed the drive name and that it’s locked.

I restarted it, unlocked the unit with my password as usual but then the usual auto run - Open Folder, did not pop up.

I opened up My Computer and it showed the drive but with no data on it. When double clicked, it was a long wait, and finally requests that I format it. Naturally, I have not formatted it. I tried reconnecting it to 2 other computers, but with the same problem. I turned it off and allowed it to ‘rest’ hoping that the ‘ghost’ inside will go away, but it’s still there after 2 days.

Seems like the MyBook doesn’t recognise that i still have data on the HDD (but there’s like >800GB) and wants me to reformat.

I can still access the WD software without any issues.

As with many here, I have irreplaceable personal data on it and am desperate to find a solution.

Thank you for any assistance!

Two things to try. The simple one is go into Device Manager and delete the driver for the external, disconnect safely and reboot system. Then reconnect the drive. If that doesn’t help try TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk  maybe that will fix the partition data.
