So several years ago I plugged my MyBook into a laptop power adapter… That obviously fried something since I couldn’t get the drive to work thereafter. I removed the drive from the enclosure not knowing there is encryption. Back then, I thought it might have been the board on the drive itself that went bad so I had a technician provide me with a new drive PCB with a cloned chip (again making the assumption that the drive’s PCB was faulty).
Since I threw away the enclosure along with the USB-SATA board, I no longer have access to them and therefore I don’t know what the chip is on the board. Since I hadn’t known about the encryption between the two, I tried plugging the bare drive into my Desktop via SATA and found I still couldn’t access the files. The drive will spin up but Windows doesn’t recognize the disc.
So here I am 3-4 years later and found this forum with a couple of threads with similar scenarios as mine. I wanted to start my own thread since my situation is a little different than some others.
I’m picking up a dual docking station to put the drive in tonight and plan on working through the decryption process to hopefully get access to my files from the disc. I have a Windows 7 laptop that I can run Ubuntu off a USB drive. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve got no back ups of the files and most of it is photos of my son when he was born and adolescence so obviously those are important to me. Lesson learned!!!
