My Passport Ultra surface - is there a film covering those holes on the surface or not?

I bought two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 drives for my new MacBook Pro retina 13 inch. One for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). One is black and the other is some sort of grey. I got them at 2 separate times (separated by a week).

Anyway, it seems I recall the black one had a film covering the surface, and I removed it and I could feel the holes on the surface pattern if I run my finger across the top.

The grey one arrived today, and I see no way of removing the film, and I’m not 100% sure there is one. But if I run my fingers across the surface it feels completely smooth - different from the black one.

Is there a film there and should I try to pry it off somehow? Or are some of them just made differently?

I know it seems like sort of a silly question, but I’m curious. Especially if the holes are meant for heat dissipation.

Thanks,

Doug

Hello douglerner,

Not all of the drives comes with the film on the top.

In case that it came with it, you should be able to remove that easily.

Please let me rephrase my question, because I think I’m not being clear.

I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB drives. They are the exact same model except one is black and the other is some sort of grey or titanium color.

I needed to exchange the grey one and got a replacement. The replacement looks the same as the black one except there is a smooth surface on top of the design holes on top. The black one doesn’t have that. I can run my fingers across the black one and feel the texture of the holes.

However, on the replacement WD drive I got, I cannot. The holes are visible, but there is something covering the surface. I can’t tell if it is a film or not, but it is definitely not obviously removable. There is no tab or extension or any obvious way of lifting the film off, if it is a film.

But they are the exact same models, except for the color.

Should I try more to remove that smooth surface somehow? Should the holes “breath” for some cooling reason?

I can’t understand why the exact same model would be different in that aspect.

The black one is model WDBZFP0010BBK-JESN and the grey-ish one is WDBZFP0010BTT-JESN.

Thank you,

Doug
