Trying to format 2 brand new WD Black 4tb drives in My Book Pro using WD Quick Drive Format tool but get message 'WD external USB drive format failed. VCDupdater - Device is locked. Program exiting" Existing 2 x 4tb drives in RAID 1 working perfectly. Same message when I’ve tried to format other WD Black drives in MBP yet they format in an external dock and run perfectly. What’s going on? Can anyone help me please to fix this. Thanks.

Yes and it wouldn’t do it. The new drives wouldn’t format in the MBP at all. However I have found a way - updated firmware with old drives in MBP, then WD Utilities worked with new drives. Bingo!! They are formatted.
But why couldn’t the firmware update with the new drives?
Maybe you would share this solution on the website because no one could help me and I’m sure others must have had this problem.
