My Book Essential 1.5 TB HDD file copying error

Hi!

I have a Western Digital My Book Essential 1.5 TB USB 3.0 hard drive. The data is available so far on it, but now it started to report copy errors on some files. If I start to copy the files to another drive, after copying a certain time, then stops and says that the file is not available. The drive stops copying the file and the WD external hard drive is losing contact with the PC and no longer available for it. Only the hard reboot helps, after which can be seen and copied again. It shown connecting errors to the PC before and had to be restarted, but I did not consider that important.

I have the WD SmartWare software that came with that configuration, but it says “failed” for the quick and for the entire test drive both.

The symptom always happens on the same files. These files are all multi GB in size, but I’m not sure this is the cause of the problem. The drive has about 1.36 TB of disk capacity, and 188 GB is free.

The drive recently moved, I carried it to a different location, but has not suffered any shock as I remember. The error is not reported to the WD Support.

I’m using WinXP, from which the standard Windows bug check has not been reported any errors.

Have you experienced this problem? What is cause of the problem? How can I try to restore these files? Is it fine to check with some HDD checker (like HD Sentinel)? What tests do I have to run while the files are not violated?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The issue may be related to corrupted data or a failed drive.  You can use DLG to run an extended test:  http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/940/session/L3RpbWUvMTMyNzYwMjA2OC9zaWQvV0Q0Q3E3UGs%3D
