My 2TB WD Elements Capacity Shrunk to 37.26GB When Formatted in Win7 64-Bit Disk Management

Hey Guys,

I had bought a new 2tb WD Elements and i wanted to partition it so went to disk management (operating System - Windows 7 64-Bit) and deleted the existing partition. then when i was about to create a partition, the total size it’s showing is 37.26gb in mbr and 37.16 in gpt.  There is no other unallocated space.

How can i get back my full capacity. Please help

Hi there and welcome to the WD community.

On this case, what happens if you connect the drive to a different computer and try to reformat it ? And regarding this computer, try to make sure the computer has the latest updates installed this is really strange behaviour.

Hi ArMak,

yes ive checked that my laptop has the latest updates and i’ve also deleted the partition on another computer but still the same result.

I’ve been scouring the web for a similar case and i’ve a couple of them but their’s was 1tb and they got it fixed by removing the harddisk from its cover, plugged it directly to the pc and they uesd a dos program by the name of ‘Capacity restore tool’.  The thing is i cant do it like that because mine can’t be done like that because the hdd and the board are attached which cant be separated and plugged to pc. I need to find another way to fix it. i’m not sure if its the right term but i think the name for this problem is LBA Error.

Any Ideas how to fix this?

Hi,

Have you tried doing a full format on the drive to see if this helps you fix the size on the drive?

I’ve tried everything my friend. i did full format, zero wipe… but nothing seems to work. my drive says it’s still 40Gb

This is weird, was this out of the box or was this after trying to partition the drive ?
