Macbook with 2 MyPassport Ultra connected won’t boot

Hi there,

I have a Macbook Pro (running on El Capitan) with two WD My Passport Ultra (2TB). They are connected via a powered USB3 hub where I also plugged in my Wacom Intuos tablet.

When I want to boot my Macbook with the hub connected, the Macbook will fire up but won’t show me the login screen. All I can do here is a “hard” switch off.
I have to disconnect the hub, hit the power button, wait for the login screen and then I can connect the hub to get everything working. It works fine then but this can’t be a solution.

Any hints?

Best regards,
Johannes

Hi jonnestorius,

Do you face the same issue while the drive is connected directly to the computer not to the hub?

Hi Alex,
thanks for your reply. I’d say that the issue is gone—I just connected both drives directly to the computer. It booted but slower than normal.

Seems that I just solved the problem. The hub was powered with a 0.45A power supply. Maybe that was underpowered. The hub is now powered with 2500mA—no booting issues so far.

Okay, the problem is not solved with a more powerful supply. The macbook still won’t boot with the external drives attached via the USB3 hub.
