Less than 1mb/s transfer speed :(

Hi and thanks for reading in advance…

I have been trawling the internet for hours and have found so many different scenarios, tried so many different fixes and have not been able to speed up the transfer rate on my extrnal hard drive. from what i understand it seems to be a case by case thing.

When i plug the hard drive in it seems to take around 30seconds to mack the (ba dum) sound.  Then when looking through the hard drive it takes a long time to load up.

I have tried the WD My book 2tb on 3 different computers (2 laptops and a desktop) and to no prevail.

I have tried to transfer files and they run at around 600-700kb/s (this is transferring from external to computer)

I did manage to move a folder of 130mb in a matter of seconds (beats me how)

Whenever i try to transfer files of reasonable size (300-700mb) it runs below a meg a sec and then generally freezes.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Im at the stage where i just want to save the information on it.  If i can back it up i will purchase a new drive after.

thankyou in advance!

Hello Kolby, if I were you, I would try verifying if the hard drive has any hardware problems, for that you can use DLG. If the test completes successfully you can try doing  backup of all of the important files and then formatting the external hard drive. Check the links below for more info.

It’s possible this is more an issue on the PC side rather than the drive.  It could be something as simple as a dodgy USB lead.  Have you tried an alternative lead, a different USB port?  I would power-cycle both the PC and the drive and see whether you still have very slow speeds.

The fact it takes so long to detect the USB being connected leads me to think it’s a computer issue.
