Is this drive noise normal?

I just bought a My Book Studio LX External Hard Drive (3TB) Drive and ever since I first started using it the drive constantly sounds like it is “working” even if it is not doing anything in particular. The best way to describe the sound would be like it is constantly writing data, or what it sounds like, from my experience, if you were transferring data from one drive to another (king of a consistent grumbling sound—not a clicking sound). I’ve owned 3 WD My Book Drives and most of them have been extremely quiet. Does this noise sound normal?

If is like a humming noise or the sound of the fan you should not worry about it, the only noise that I have encountered indicates drive failure would probably be the clicking noise, besides that, not much to worry about. Anyways, it would not hurt to test your drive for failures with a Diagnostic Software that was provided by WD and that way you can ensure your drive is not failing.

I have heard of this “clicking” noise/problem.  The noise I am hearing is not necessarily a “clicking” but more like  a grumbling/grinding sound that you get when a drive is writing data, but it is constant. I guess this might be normal, but is different than the other WD My Book drives I’ve had that are usually extremely silent. I guess I’m not sure if our idea of “clicking” are the same or not. Any more thoughts?

I would recommend you to test the drive using the Diagnostic Software that I provided you on the previous answer. Please review it on the link below.
