Is it necessary to partition my book essential 2tb

Hello,

I recently bought a WD My Book Essential 2tb usb 3.0

I am on win 7 x64

Is it necessary to partition the drive into smaller partition…say 500gb x 4 or so…
Is there a safety risk in not partitioning the drive and use full 2tb at once.

If it is necessary to partition then is there any way to partition without erasing the current data i put in it

Note : I do not wish to use this drive for booting…its juz for movies n stuff and some backup.

Also, I have Asus M4A89gtd pro usb3 mobo…intel ssd 80 gb(boot) and samsung spinpoint f3 7200 rpm drive…
but Wd My book speed m getting is juz 25-30 mbps…plz help

I don’t see any need to partition the drive unless your video setup has a max partition size or needs a different format.

At your own risk

Go into ‘device manager’ > ‘disk drives’ 

Right click on ‘My Book device’ > ‘Properties’

‘Policies’ menu > “Better Performance” (enables Write caching)
