OK, I’ve just been through everything I can find in the knowledgebase and Community and can’t find anything on this. Is it possible to perform an incremental or differential backup using Smartware Pro 2.4.16? Since there’s no reference to either anywhere, I assume that all backups are Full and the only option is to use the Category to decide how to select files. REALLY? Am I missing something or is this software really that rudimentary?
Not sure that it matters, but I’m using a Passport Ultra, btw, on Windows 7.
It’s the opposite. WD SmartWare backups are all incremental. The difference between File Backup and Category Backup is the ability to select individual folders as opposed to entire file extension families.
Thanks Trancer. If that’s accurate, that helps. Still leaves me wondering why the options aren’t there or why it’s not more obvious that the default is incremental. And still doesn’t get me the differential I’d prefer and, I assume, also means that there’s no obvious way to do/combine those with periodic full backups to establish a basic routine (?).
WD SmartWare only does incremental backups. It does not feature an option for full backups. It provides scheduling options for frequency, but said backup will also be incremental in nature.
Hmmm. Well that would make restores a bit challenging, wouldn’t it? Always been a fan of WD hardware, but this doesn’t make much sense for a prominent storage hardware provider. Might be time to look for another backup software.
