I want to back up from Desktop and retrieve data to my laptop

I just bought a My Passport external drive. I want to be able to backup files from my desktop and then access the files from my laptop when traveling. Can’t find the instructions for this anywhere. Would appreciae some help on this. Thanks

I would back them up manually. Then you can arrange them so they are simple to find. Some Sync software might be useful there. MS has a free one SyncToy.
