How to correctly Disconnect / Turn off Drive?

Thank you.

Hello,

I just bought a “My Book Studio LX External Hard Drive (3TB)” and have used the WD Smartware Software to put a password on the drive.  I am using the Firewire 800 cable/connection on my Macbook Pro running Leopard.

What is the proper way to shut down/disconnect the drive after use? Do I drag the drive to the garbage and then drag the WD Smartware Icon to the trash, or do I just disconnect the firewire cable after draging the drive to the trash, or am I suppsed to turn off the power in the back of the drive? What is the exact, correct process?

I am very concerend about this because my older My Book drive no longer mounts on my computer (different post and issue) and I want to make sure I never have this problem again.

I greatly appreciate any response.

Ejecting the drive icon will be sufficient. Once ejected you can disconnect the drive.

If you want, you only need to drag the drive’s Icon to the trash can, then it would be safe to disconnect the cables.

Hi there - I cannot seem to delete from my hard drive when plugged into a mac?

It wont allow me, does anyone know why?

thanks,

John

If you used the drive on Windows the drive will have read only permissions on a Mac. You can decide which operating system you want to use it or get an application like  NTFS 3G to use it on both.
