How does drive health affect performance on an 8TB HDD?

I’m noticing my 8TB HDD is much slower than usual, and I’m wondering if drive health could be the issue. Could bad sectors or wear affect performance, and how can I check for this? Any suggestions or tools for diagnosing the problem would be greatly appreciated!

If your 8TB HDD is slow, bad sectors or wear might be the cause. Use CrystalDiskInfo to check the drive’s health. Run CHKDSK (chkdsk X: /f /r) to find and fix bad sectors. You can also check for errors in Disk Management. If the drive has issues, back up your data and think about replacing it.

Are you using a Windows or Mac computer?

If you want to check the HDD health on a Windows PC, you can run Command Prompt.

1. Open Command Prompt: Search for “Command Prompt” in the Windows search bar at the bottom of your screen, right-click it, and select “Run as administrator”.

2. In the Command Prompt window, type wmic diskdrive get status and press Enter. If you see the result is OK, your drive is functioning normally. If the result is " Pred Fail", your hard drive has a predicted failure and requires immediate file backup.

On a Mac, you can use System Report on a Mac/MacBook to check SSD health conditions. Open the Apple menu > choose ‘About This Mac’ > click on ‘More Info’ in the pop-up window and ‘System Settings’ will be opened > scroll down and choose ‘System Report’ > select Storage under the Hardware section.

If S.M.A.R.T. Status shows Verified, your SSD is healthy.
