Help, please!

I just bought a new laptop, an HP Spectre running Windows 8. My old laptop was a Gateway, running Windows Vista. I safely disconnected the My Passport Ultra, and plugged it into the new computer. Well, it started giving me weird options. It didn’t automatically install any software to my new computer. So then I tried installing them by hand. I had issues with that also. It appeared to have installed the firmware and the driver. But when I tried install the Smartware update, it didn’t appear to ever install correctly. My computer binged, like it was going to give me the typical “This program wants to make changes to your PC” alert, but that alert never came up. Then I had trouble installing other completely unrelated sofware. So I deleted everyting I installed from WD, and was at least able to get my other program installed. But… now how do I get my WD stuff back? Any suggestions? Is there a correct order for downloading the software that I missed, perhaps?

My new computer DOES recognize its presence. It gives me the option to safely remove it. I did that and plugged it in again, same weird options from Windows 8 regarding what to do with it, and no automatic download of WD sofware.

Hi, have you tried installing the Smartware from WD site? In the drive shown on This PC? Are you able to access your information?

Actually, I think I finally figured it out. Still trying to locate some of my music files, but I think that it probably more MY fault than the drive’s. But I was able to install the software from “my computer” and it retrieved most of the files I need. Now to get iTunes to cooperate and find everything.
