I have had my WD WD100000H1U-00 for 2 years. I use it to back up all my files, especially recently when I got a new computer. Today I was using it and noticed my computer was not recognized it. I noticed that when I plugged and unplugged the power, it would spin for about 10 seconds, and then sound like it was turning off. I did not even see the blue light. About twice in the last 9 months, I’ve been able to get it to turn on long enough my backup material, but most of the time it does the behavior I described. What is wrong?
Hi there, that’s an old mybook essential and I guess your “new” computer runs Windows 7, and that doesn’t help…
Most of the times that drive will need to be formatted to work well on W7, but even so it can have problems due to its age.
I tried hooking the drive to my old computer, but it still had the same issue. Starts up, spins, and then cools down, within 2 seconds.
Please help! I am having the exact same issue!
I have loads of priceless music on my hard drive, and now it does not seem to power up. I get the loading sound for about 5 seconds, then powers down. I tried using a different AC plug, but no result.
Help!

What if you check if the drive is on disk management (right-click computer/my computer> manage> disk management) and see if the drive is there? Also, that drive is old, so it’s possible that the enclosure (The casing) failed while the mechanical drive inside is still good. If your drive is out of warranty then try to open it and connect it directly to your computer (internally) and see if it works.
I know that the external hard drive does not show up on the file manager. I will try taking the casing off when I get a chance.
Luckily, I have not lost too many files or anything. I got it working once in March, and I downloaded all my old backup files and such to my new computer. But there are a few old backups I’d like to get hold of again.
OK, made some great progress, though I’m not sure if I needed to open the hard drive up.
I had made a note that one time, I was successful by FIRST hooking it to the power cord and letting it sit for awhile. Then I plugged in the micro-USB.
So anyhows, I took some screwdrivers and opened up the case. Then I tried hooking it to power. Everytime I did that, the blue light was just blink, and the same thing would happen, with the power starting and then tapering off. I tried hooking it up to the micro USB a few times and nothing really happened. Then I unhooked it and let it sit for a bit .Then I hooked the micro USB and lo and behold, the blue light came on and stayed on, and then my computer recognized it. Note that I used my older XP computer.
Any thoughts on how I can make this victory a little more permanent?
Well, that method isn’t working so much anymore. Wish someone on the board would comment or so.

Did you ever try pulling the drive from the case, and connecting it to your computer internally, as was suggested above?
