Hi I am new to this type of thing and I have no clue where to start. I bought my drive from someone on e-bay. They said it was new but it came with no manual or other info. I just want to get this up and running properly. Any help or links and or advise would be great. Thanks
On the bottom of the drive, there should be a number labeled Model or P/N (Please do NOT post the Serial or S/N) - Please let us know what it is so we know what kind of drive it is.
Make sure it’s not plugged in when you flip it upside down.
thank you for your response. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you, but I was just so frustrated with this this I walked away from it. The model # wdbaaf5000erk 01 0411d. That’s the first one the other unit I bought is model #wd3200I032-001. Sure hope you can help. I can not get either of the to be seen by my laptop, Win 10. Thanks for your help
I’m not even sure what software I need to download for these units.
Hi @bwood03 - Neither of those are current WD model numbers. The first one is very close to a model for a very old My Passport Essential, but there is no model that ended in “erk” - could you verify the P/N on that one? If so, here’s the support page for that drive (it would have come with SmartWare):
The second model number “wd3200I032” based on Google appears to be a VERY old My Book Essential edition that did not come with any backup software besides a trial version of the now defunct WD Anywhere Backup/Memeo Auto Backup - I’m amazed any of these are still running as the last of these were manufactured something like 10 years ago.
As an aside, both of these drives were end of life years before Windows 10 was even announced (in the My Book’s case, it was EOL before Windows 7 if I recall!) so we’ve never tested the drive in this environment. Are they recognized on any computers running an older version of Windows?
