Firmware updater not seeing Studio drive

My apologies if this was asked, but I didn’t see a post for it.

I have a My Passport Studio 640GB which I attached using USB as directed.  My Mac sees and works with the drive just fine over firewire, so I know the drive works.  I have no password set up.

When i launch the Studio IV Firmware Updater (v1.012), it appears to eject the drive to prepare for updating.  Or perhaps the updater ejecting the drive is the source of the problem.

The problem is that the dialog just says “Searching for My Book/My Passport Studio IV device…”, and never actually finds the drive.

This seems like such a fairly basic and obvious problem that I have to be missing a step somewhere.  Any ideas about how to resolve this one?  Thanks.

Are you updating the Firmware with the drive connected via firewire or usb ?

I’m connecting via USB as the instructions directed.

ShadowLight,

Try the Firmware update again:

Let’s start from fresh.

Power off your Mac computer and disconnect the WD My passport drive from your computer.

Power on your Mac computer.

Download the Firmware update again from this link http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/utilitiesstep1.asp?id=wdfMP_Studio&os=mac

After downloading is finish, plug in the WD My Passport drive via USB connection and wait for drive to be ready.

Run the Firmware updater, it should find the drive and just follow the instructions on the screen.

Be sure to disconnect and power cycle the WD My Passport drive and restart the computer after update is finish.

If the firmware updater couldn’t find the drive, you need to use windows PC machine to update the firmware.

Updating from windows PC will bring the drive back.

I tried all the steps, and it still gives me the same message as in my original post.  The firmware updater unmounts the drive and then doesn’t find it for the update.

Since I don’t have convenient access to a Windows machine, and updating a Mac formatted drive in that manner doesn’t give me any confidence, I’ll just wait until WD comes up with an updater for Mac that works.

you should look in the thread

External HD not working after firmware update

for the workaround.

You must run the firmware installaer from w m$ windows machine, then connect it to the mac and your drive will be back. The mac firmware updater bricks the drive.
