I have/had widows xp with all of my photos on it. I exported all of those files to my (older style 2007 I think) wd elements external/ portable drive. To my dismay when I tried to load it back onto my new computer with windows 10 it wouldn’t connect. I know the external hard drive is working & not corrupted. So I used an old laptop (lucky I kept it) with windows xp. Plugged the external hard drive into it & used an external card reader to transfer the files to the card. Then placed the card into the new computer (windows 10) & to my delight it loaded all of my photos and videos onto the new computer. Sorry for the long story, I hope it helps someone out there.
Did you try Support. This problem is very common. There should be an answer there.
