Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

My current external hard drive is getting old and likes to disconnect with the slightest movement, so I bought a new one to use just as a backup in case my current one totally quits on me someday. But I can’t copy and paste anything into it because of the error: “Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

Some things will paste into it, but once this error happens, I have to disconnect and then a lot of the stuff I had previously copied and pasted just disappears. The hard drive is a WD Passport 500 gig. My computer is a 2007 Toshiba with Windows Vista.

Things I’ve already tried to do that haven’t worked:

  • started in safe mode
  • looked for drive updates
  • copy/paste from computer instead of my other external hard drive
  • copy/paste small files and individual files
  • zip all the files first
  • tried a different port
  • tried a different computer
  • basically everything I found when I google searched my error

Not sure if it’s related, but I’m no longer able to burn files onto DVD’s, which is why I bought the hard drive in the first place because I used to do weekly backups onto DVD’s but that no longer works.

Have you tried with a different cable?

Normally I/O error is related to imput ouput errors.

So check the port on the drive and the cable it self.

Yeah, I tried with a friend’s cable. Didn’t fix it.
