Elements 4TB noise and plays up

WDBWLG0040HBK-AESN
I have had this drive for about 6 months and recently it has started playing up. I have been using the drive for photo and video editing but not too demanding. Just copying over and rendering onto. It is quite full, around 90gb left.
Different folders/sectors? don’t copy or read correctly and the HDD makes a unfamiliar noise when accessing those parts.

have you checked the drive ? eg. run a chkdsk or used Data LifeGuard Diagnostics ?

I have run a chkdsk and no errors came upbut not lifeguard

I have done a quick lifeguard test and it failed :frowning2:

quick test on drive 6 did not complete!
Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Faliure Checkpoint = 97
(Unknown Test)
SMART self-test did not complete on drive 6!

That doesn’t look good … not sure what the official response should be, but personally, i would do the followings things

  1. Make sure you have a Back-Up of your Data (i have 2 WD 4TB drives and one is a back-up)
  2. using Data LifeGuard Diagnostics … do a Write Zeros (this will take a long time and erase everthing, and may fix the error)

if it doesn’t …

  1. Make sure you drive is Registered, and lodge a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) … since it’s still under Warranty

Thank you so much for your help
I cannot backup the files as I do not have enough room on anything :frowning:
I will try the RMA and get some more information about it.
Thanks again

I am going to buy a new 4TB to backup everything and return the old one. Should I send it to WD with the RMA or return it to the supplier (JB HiFi)?
Thanks

I think you’ve only got 30 Days to return it to JB click “here

Or just give them a call.

If it’s over the 30 days then you’ll have to RMA it (also, note, you’ll have to pay postage)

Ah I see.
Yeah it is over 30 days. (6 months)
