Had no trouble copying files until last week when I began getting a “Can’t read file” error message for any file of any type large or small I tried to copy to the drive. I can read the drive and I can copy from it to other drives - I just can’t copy to it. I ran chkdsk and it finds “bad records” but doesn’t appear to fix them even though that box is checked. When it runs the check for bad sectors it just stops after awhile with no result. Simple question - the disk contains redundant back up so I could simply format it if that would address the problem and then reload what was on it. Is that a viable solution or is there something else I should try.
The drive might be corrupted. Before formatting the unit, try testing it with the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics tool, which can perform drive identification, diagnostics, and repairs on a Western Digital drive.
Thank you.
