Cannot retrieve data

I need to retreive my photos and music from my WD smartware passport, but when I go to retrieve it nothing is showing up in the backed up volumes. If I go in through my computer I can find the files I want to retrieve but I get a message saying I don’t have permission to access the files. How can I get my data to show up in the backed up volumes list?
