Cannot retrieve backup

Hi all - Hoping someone can help.  I recently lost an internal drive and had run a back up several months ago using SmartWare (not sure which version - this becomes important).

I bought an installed a new drive and got it set up all right then wanted to retrieve my back up.  Since the last back-up, I had updated my SmartWare to the most recent version.  When I pull up the drive it shows my MyBook with a big file of “additional files” but no categories (pictures, music, etc).

A couple of questions:

  1.  Is there any way to retrieve the old file using the current SmartWare (2.2.1)?

  2.  Assuming #1 is no, Is there any way to determine which version of SmartWare my backup was created with?

  3.  Can I get at the files not using SmartWare and just re-file them myself?

Thanks all!

Hello,

The best way to proceed here will be to retrieve the files manually.

On your external drive there should be a folder called “WDSmartware.swstor”. This folder contains all the backups that you have done using Smartware. You can access the folder and then browse for you files, once you find them you can copy them to the computer.

Thanks HDKnows.  Unfortunately, the files do not show up in the .swstor folder or any of the subfolders.  They did for a brief time when I first started trying to retrieve but then they slowly were moved somewhere else on the drive.  I have unhidden all folders using Windows preferences and still cannot locate.

It appears that the files were all overwritten/erased but the only reason I still think they may be there is that the main page still shows there are big files on the drive even though they are not categorized as anything but “additional files”.  I am stumped.
