I bought the WD Elements to use to backup PC Windows hardrive. I started thinking, can I hook it up to use as a DVR expander with Verizon Fios box if I use some kind of adapter to convert to esata??
if so can it be used for both PC and DVR or it has to be one or the other?
Third question, is there a unit that allows for both usages? Someone pointed me to the AV DVR expander, but I’m not sure if it would do that for me?
Hello, yes, but DVR’s use a format that is not recognized with PC’s. So even thought you can physically connect any compatible hard drive to the PC/DVR, you wont be able to access the files from the PC.
So say I want to just use it as a DVR expander and not for PC then, exactly what plug will I need to buy to connect it to the DVR?
and what about my third question? will the AV expander model work as both on PC and DVR? someone from WD said yes on the phone, but I really need to make sure before I buy it.
Most DVRs use an E-Sata connection, the only drive supported by WD for DVR use, is the My Book AV DVR Expander line. It is possible to use the AV expander for PC and DVR use, but you will need to format it every time that you want to use it on one of them.
