In the Apple forum I heard that for moving these files I would have to configure the harddrive in a HFS+ format (called Mac OS extended (journaled)), but I can not find anything how to configure WD drive like this. The time machine back ups are running fine and I also managed to store some “normal” files on the WD, but with the imovie and the photos file, I am not successfull.
You can click on the link below for instructions on how to format the drive for Mac. Keep in mind that formatting the unit will erase all data.
You can go into Disk Utility and see what the current format is. You shouldn’t have been able to copy anything on to the drive if it was formatted for Windows. If you want to reformat for Mac OS, then follow the instructions jpeng posted.
Hello Bill,
thanks for your answer.
I have been able to copy it, so the format is ok. I thought there might be differences within the Mac format as they were specificly refering to this HFS+ standard when trying to move the photo and imovie files.
So not being able to move these files has nothing to do with the format……what else could it be ?

If you’re using iTunes or something similar, it is possible that there are DRMs preventing you from moving/backing up your files. You may need to research your options with Mac based software.
If you are copying an imovie file to a drive, my cloud, etc, you are wasting your time. Apple prevents their movie files stored on drives from playing on any device. This has been the situation since iOS 8 was released…
