Can My Book 3TB be saved?

Hi all,

I have a WD My Book 3TB external drive which I bought in 2014. I need to recover all my files off this drive which was working fine on my 27" iMac Late 2015 until last night. I was initially unable to open the drive which is password protected. I downloaded the latest version of WD Security to try again and at this point the power just dropped completely from the drive.

I’ve opened it up to check the version of PCI as I know the drive is encrypted on this model and can;t be mounted into another enclosure. When I try to power on the drive, the white light flashes for a very brief moment, then nothing.

The reference numbers on the board are CEP3520610150872e and 4061-705149-A00 Rev AB. I cannot find a replacement on eBay or through any other retailer. I’m hoping a replacement will at least get the drive running so I can copy my files across.

Any ideas on how I can find this part please or other ways of recovering my data?

Thanks

Are you saying that the drive doesn’t spin up?

If the drive spins up when connected directly to a SATA port inside your computer but not inside the enclosure, then either the power adaptor is bad or the USB-SATA bridge PCB is bad.

If the drive doesn’t spin up when connected directly to a SATA port, then check the TVS diodes.

Thanks buddy. I’ve just bought a drive enclosure so will put the drive in here and see if it spins. I know I won’t be able to access my data as it’s encrypted on this particular model but at least it will eliminate whether it spins or not. I haven’t got a clue about how to test and replace TVS diodes, that’s well beyond my capability.
