Brand New My Book Essential 2TB Drive Dead?

I just receive my My Book Essential 2TB USB 3.0/2.0 drive today and went to plug it into my iMac. The drive doesn’t show up in finder or in Disk Utility. When I plug it into the wall the white light in front comes on and stays on, but the drive doesn’t make any other audible sounds.

I plugged the drive into my old laptop with Windows XP just to see and it recognizes that new hardware has been plugged in, but when I cancel the new hardware set up like described in the manual, the auto run that’s supposed to install the hard drives drivers never comes up and it doesn’t show up as a drive inn explorer.

Is this a completely dead drive? I don’t even hear any spinning or fan running.

Well for starters the drive comes formatted for Windows not Mac. On Windows look in Disk Management and see if the drive is shown there. It may just need a letter assigned. Also look in the device manager and see if it’s there. Do you intend to use the drive on Mac and Windows both?
