Backup Solution from WD

I need a backup solution for my home computers. I have the following devices

Windows 10 Desktop (C: drive 500GB; E: drive 3TB) - drives are encrypted with BitLocker
Windows 10 Laptop (C: drive 500GB) - drive encrypted with BitLocker

I need to be able to backup both computers on a daily basis and it should happen without the user needing to do anything (behind the scenes). My preference would be a single external storage device that is accessible to both the desktop and the laptop. I don’t care if the device is hooked up to the desktop as long as the laptop can get to it. The device could also be just a network attached device. Whatever works best. Most of the data will be coming from the desktop.

I need the storage device to be secure so that if someone were to steal it, they couldn’t access any of the data on the device. But if I had to restore data to a new computer, I would be able to access (using a code, key, password, etc.).

I’d like it to do backups real-time. So if I add a new file on my desktop, a copy gets sent to the backup drive.

File History would be nice but not critical. Being able to sync with a cloud-based service (to get the data offsite) would be nice as well, but not critical.

Can you help me select a solution (or solutions)? And explain pros/cons of each?

Hello,

I think you better take a look at the My Cloud drives:

Thank you. Does the My Cloud device support encryption of the drive? In other words, if the My Cloud drive is stolen, can the thief hook it up to their computer/network and read the files on the drive?

Hello,

You may protect your data by creating a password to your shares.

Is there any encryption on the drive itself? Similar to how bitlocker works with Windows?

My Cloud has no encryption on the drive itself.

A thief can simply reset the device. This will set the password to the default value of none, and resetting does not erase your files. This is not unik to My Cloud. Almost all data storage devices without strong encryption can be accessed by thiefs.

One possible solution is to use a harddisk with built-in encryption. I backup files to WD My Passport Ultra. When the usb drive is disconnected, you need a password to access it again.

Backup can be done with a .bat file using robocopy, or .sh file using rsync (on Linux systems).
I use parameter to these programs to mirror data to My Passport Ultra. I start the mirroring manaully, but you can use Task Scheduler or crontab (Linux) to auto-start the backup at given times.

Pros: easy, fast backup, log-files
Cons: must manually connect and disconnect drive to lock/unlock drive.

Hi, I just know a way to backup to NAS backup server, check if it works. It seems that you can type the username and password, so without pwd combination, there is no way to access the data just like you want it to.
