Right out of the box my NEW WD My Book Duo 8TB has had problems being recognized by Win 7 after a period of non use, like it goes to sleep. Windows can’t see it and WD utilities can’t see it either, when I try and access a file I get a I/O error. To make it work, I have to unplug the USB cable wait 10 seconds then plug it back in and then the drive comes back on-line.
WD has sent a different shorter USB, did NOT fix the issue.
WD assisted me with upgrading the drivers and turning OFF the SLEEP setting with the WD Utilities, did NOT fix the issue.
WD sent me a replacement WD My Book Duo 8TB, same problems, did NOT fix the issue.
I’m having the same issue. The Professor I’m helping has gone thru 3 drives that BSOD’s when the drive is connected to the computer. I have tried our My Book Duo 8TB on three different computers. All Dells: T5500, T5810’s and an old GX380.
If I download the drivers from WD I’m able to plugin the drive without the BSOD and run the test utilities from WD showing that the drive is fine. No drive letter is mapped. I follow the instruction to create a new volume but fails when it comes time to format. WD SmartWare states the there are no writable partition found.
Is this a known issue at WD? Please let me know what else we can do.
update: I was able to get the drive to work on an Apple computer. I could format as exFAT on the MAC.
I was able to use the drive on a windows 10 system. I reformatted the drive as NTFS and the drive still worked. I moved the drive to my windows 7 computer and plugged it in and got the BSOD. arrrggg.
Update #2: I had the drive formatted exFAT on a MAC. When I moved it to the windows 7 it BSOD’ed.
I am having the same problem and have also had my drive replaced.
