I went to delete my files on my WD External My Book(?) hard drive so that I could re-save some files, and accidentally reformatted instead of deleting them. Now it says that the file is corrupted and unreadable and I can’t do anything. I don’t need to retrieve files since they’re on my PC, but I would like to keep manually saving onto the WD external hard drive (copy/paste; without downloading the automatic backup program onto my computer). Does anyone know how I can fix this? When researching, I see that I’m not the only one who has done this, but can’t find my specific solution. Thank you! (Hope I made myself clear.)
Simply follow the instructions below to run a disc check with CMD to fix broken and unreadable files or directories in Windows 10/8/7:
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the command prompt.
Step 2: When it opens, enter “chkdsk%drive letter5 /f /r” after typing it.
Step 3: A warning screen will appear that reads, “If you wish to dismount or forcibly step on the volume.” To decline this request, press “N.” If you want to schedule a disc check for this drive in the future, another warning will then show up on your screen. Press the ‘y’ key to agree.
Step 4: The check disc utility will launch when the machine has rebooted. Let it be finished.
Step 5: Review the log file to find out the faults the check disc programme was able to fix.
Drive from Disk Properties Scan
This is another another way to examine your hard disc for faults. It can check for faulty sectors and fix file system issues. This approach is much simpler than the previous. Let’s see what happens.
Click twice to launch (My) Computer in step 1. The hard disc with the “The file or repository is corrupted and unreadable” problem should be located.
Step 2: Right-click it and choose Properties
Step 3: choose the Tools tab. A checkbox will be present. Select the hard disc to inspect it.
Step 4: If a hard drive fault is found, you will be notified and given the opportunity to repair the hard disc.
