Accessing previous backups

I have a number of backups on my WD External hard drive but when I look at these backups on the drive they show as being empty folders. Does this mean that once a backup is superceded by a new backup then the old backup ceases to exist and just shows up as a folder name on the drive?  I recently restored my backup to my computer and I was not given an option as to which backup I wanted so I presume that the drive only accesses the lastest backup–is that correct? I’m not sure why any folders are showing up on the drive if they are empty–and is it safe to delete them? As a matter of fact I don’t even see the lastest backup as a folder on the drive because they are all empty. What am I missing? Is Smart Ware the only place to access the backup files and it is only the lastest backup files that are able to be accessed? My drive is filling up and something is using up the space but I can’t figure out what. Can someone help me understand this please?

Hello and welcome to the WD community.

Actually, you should be able to see the previous backups and access the files from the computer. Have you tried checking if the folders have data inside them, could be that the files are somehow hidden.
