Accessing my book time machine

Hi - this may be a dumb/easy issue to resolve: I have a WD my book studio edition (was set up as time machine for my old macs around 2016). I am trying to access the contents (mainly photos) via my MacBook with OS Catalina. In the finder I can see the icons/folders but I can’t figure out how to access. What program or software is needed to view? What is the process for doing so? I don’t think there is any technical issue I just don’t know how to figure it out as has been so long and on a new computer. Thank you!!

More details on my issue: I go into the ‘time machine’ icon and it allows me to scroll through the files but when i try to open the iphotos (or any other application) is has a big white X over it (i.e., does not allow me to access). What could help resolve this? Many thanks!!

Don’t worry, Time Machine to backup is easily accessible, just check the below steps and do-it-yourself -

  1. Open the Time Machine by clicking the Time Machine icon in the menu bar or choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Time Machine, then select “Show Time Machine in menu bar”.
  2. Use the arrows and timeline to browse the local snapshots and backups.
  3. Select one or more files or data that you want to restore then click Restore.
  4. Restored data is always saved to their original location.
