I backed up my old HP laptop (running Windows 8) using my WD Elements portable HD. I purchased the Smart Ware Pro license and installed the HD onto my new Asus laptop (running Windows 10.) I transferred all of my files successfully, but when I try to open them I keep getting the message that access is denied because I don’t have the required permissions.
I am the Owner/Administrator on both computers. I have Full Control of the files and have File Sharing turned on. Why can’t I access my files?
Any help is appreciated!
File sharing permissions apply to files copied over your network; not local files copied to another local device with inherited permissions.
This means that files from computer 1 expect to be opened from computer 1. Computer 2 will not have the permissions to access them because the user account and credentials from computer 1 do not exist in computer 2.
Try changing the ownership of the root folder, granting access to “everyone” and “anonymous logon” in order to clear permissions inherited from a different user account.
