Support for the TAK lossless codec.

Given the implementation of FLAC compatibility, is there any possibility of adding TAK [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TAK\_(audio\_codec)to the list of codecs that the Fuze is capable of handling?

I’ve never heard of it. Given that wikipedia says “support is very limited”, I doubt it’s on Sandisk “to-do” list.

What’s wrong with FLAC?

FLAC on the Fuze is a very much appreciated feature, don’t get me wrong - it’s why I bought a Fuze in the first place. However, TAK has better a compression / encode time profile. Additionally it is more efficient at compressing the output of the lossyWAV preprocessor.

TAK is closed source and only runs on Windows.  So it isn’t like there’s sample code or even a spec that Sansa could use as a starting point.

AFAIK the only one with the source code is the author.  If he dies or simply loses interest, the format will be an orphan.

I understand that at this time it is closed source. Maybe interest from a company with a userbase the size of SanDisk would spur Thomas to release enough information to allow the implementation of a decoder. Given the developments thus far, I doubt that he will lose interest. Mortality is something to think about though…
